Diablo 3 Information

By David Smith

"Twenty years have passed since the Prime Evils were defeated and banished from the world of Sanctuary. Now, you must return to where it all began - the town of Tristram - and investigate rumors of a fallen star, for this is the first sign of evil's rebirth, and an omen that the End Times have begun."

This is the story of Diablo III, a first-person action role-playing video game released by Blizzard Entertainment in mid-2012. Setting a new record for the fastest-selling PC game ever, with over 3.5 million copies sold in the first 24 hours, Diablo III will also soon be available for PlayStation 3 (out now) and PlayStation 4 (set to launch in late 2013). Considered to fit within the "dungeon crawl" and "hack and slash" genres of video games, Diablo III was also the highest selling PC game last year, selling more than 12 million copies in 2012.

Taking place some 20 years after the events in Diablo II, Diablo III is set in Sanctuary, the dark fantastical world of the series. Diablo III seamlessly introduces some minor and some major changes to game play, while keeping the general feel and theme of its predecessor games. Five character classes are available in Diablo III, including the Monk, Demon Hunter, Wizard, Barbarian and Witch Doctor. The Witch Doctor is the only new character, as the rest seems to be refashioned and redesigned characters from the previous two games. In this version of the game, you can also pick your own gender for each of the characters, a new feature as in previous games, the gender of each character was fixed.

This installment also introduces a custom 3D game engine, which presents gamers with a new type of game play, where an overhead view is used for perspective and skill must be increased, since enemies are able to utilize the environment as well, such as crawling up the sides of the wall and ceiling from the depths into the foreground of the combat area. Another notable change is the auction houses. Diablo III features two types of auction houses, one where players spend in-game gold and another where players can buy or sell virtual items using real-world money, added thru an account online. Assigning and swapping skills has also been made easier in this version of the game, and skill runes (another new feature of Diablo III) are skill modifiers that are unlocked as the player levels up.

Although critics and gamers received Diablo III quite well overall (and the 87.77% ranking on GameRankings) there is one major area of criticism. Due to strong digital rights management demands, this version of the game demands that you have an active internet connection at all times, which renders offline single-player mode game playing impossible.
