Doing Academic Proofreading In A Few Steps

By Rena Hudson

The process of academic proofreading is a long and grueling one because one has to be very meticulous if he wants to edit an academic work because these types of papers have to be near perfect. It is for this reason that proofreaders and copywriters have very good writing skills. This is simply because there are so many things to consider when fixing these works.

The first thing that one should do would be to look at the paper from a far and check for any mistakes in the format. If one has spotted some mistakes, do not make any changes yet as this is only the first step. Take note that formatting is extremely important because readers also take a look at how the paper is presented.

Now after taking a look at the formatting of the paper, the next step would be to go over the content and get an idea of what the paper is about. Without having a general idea of what the paper is talking about, then it is very difficult to make any changes. By grasping what the paper is trying to tell the reader, he will be able to have an easier time fixing the content later on.

So after going through these things, now would be the time to check the paper if there are any mistakes in content and formatting. So start with the first sentence and check if the spelling, word usage, and grammar are all correct. If there are mistakes, then use special indications and markings that will help the writer be able to know where he made mistakes and errors.

Grammar errors and word usage are not the only things that one should look at as wordiness and useless sentences are also something to change. Take note that academic papers are supposed to be brief and straightforward without any irrelevant sentences. So if there are some sentences that should not be there, it should be taken out.

Format is also very important as stated above because the presentation will determine how well a person fixes his work. Now in this stage, one should be able to examine which parts should be fixed when it comes to format like spacing and indents. Also, he must also look at size and font while editing.

Now once the content and format have been handled, then the last part would be to fix the sources and the bibliography as well as the footnotes and end notes. When it comes to listing the sources and references, academic writers are supposed to use certain formats like MLA and APA so that readers can identify the sources. It is also the job of the proofreader to check if the format that was used was done properly and correctly.

If one wants to become a proofreader, then these are the things that he will be doing. Academic proofreading is actually the most difficult of them all because of the long process. Also, these works cannot be edited just anyhow because readers would expect works from famous authors or scholars to be as close to perfect as possible.
